A workshop in the Department of Translation at Alnoor University on cultural adaptation

The Department of Translation at the College of Arts, Alnoor University, organized a scientific workshop on the morning of Tuesday, February 24, 2026, entitled (Cultural Adaptation in Translation). The workshop was delivered and moderated by Dr. Nazim Younis Saleh, a lecturer in the department. The workshop addressed the concept of cultural adaptation as one of the fundamental pillars in the translation process, particularly when dealing with texts that involve social and cultural dimensions specific to different societies. The lecturer emphasized the importance of understanding the cultural context of the source text and rendering it in a way that aligns with the target language culture, thereby preserving meaning and significance while avoiding misunderstanding or unintended offense. The workshop also presented practical examples illustrating the differences between literal translation and culturally adaptive translation, highlighting the translator’s role in building a bridge of intercultural communication between peoples. In addition, it discussed the major challenges faced by translation students in this field and ways to enhance their linguistic and cultural competencies. The workshop witnessed active engagement from attending students through interventions and questions that enriched the session, reflecting the department’s commitment to strengthening practical aspects alongside theoretical foundations in translation studies.
